Position Description: Saleyards Assistant

About the Role:
- Prepare the saleyard for each sale and clean up after each in accordance with saleyards checklist and procedures
- Monitor operations to ensure that Agents, their staff and saleyards users conduct activities at the Saleyard in accordance with Council Policy and Procedure and industry standards and guidelines
- Carry out maintenance to ensure that the facilities of the Saleyard are able to be operated safely and effectively
- Ensure that Saleyard facilities function during the course of sales and carry out any emergency repairs in accordance with Safe Work Method Statements during sales
- Where maintenance is required beyond the scope of the position, liaise with the Commercial Land Officer and/or Manager - land and Property to arrange for an appropriate contractor
- The ability to attend required stakeholder meetings and/or operate the saleyard out of normal working hours may be required
- Keep saleyards records during livestock sales and provide reports to the Coordinator Community Facilities within the specified time following the end of the sale, in accordance with Council requirements
- Promote information sharing and knowledge transfer to drive evidence-based decision-making, enhance capability and optimise capacity
- Contribute to the performance of Council: demonstrate professional conduct, make the best use of knowledge, experience and skills and be accountable for own decisions and actions
- Contribute to a safe workplace: comply with legislative and organisational requirements and be accountable for own decisions and actions
About You:
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Trade or Tertiary qualification in a related field or equivalent relevant experience
- Well developed "hands on" practical skills, especially for working with steel and undertaking maintenance tasks in a related environment
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills including the ability to complete minor documentation and organise quotations with Contractors and Suppliers
- Effective communication skills to enable interaction with a wide variety of people including agents, buyers, sellers and contractors
- High level of physical fitness
- Ability to commit to the requirements of WHS Act, policies and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to accurately record data and complete minor documentation
- Capable of reading and drawing simple plans
- The ability to work as part of a close-knit team and on your own, as required
- Proven ability to develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships to achieve outcomes that contribute to the achievement of the organisation’s strategic goals
- Q Fever, Hepatitis and Tetanus Vaccinations or willingness to obtain
- Current Class C drivers’ licence.
- Be able to work Monday to Friday and on-call as required after- hours and weekends
Desirable criteria:
- Demonstrated experience in handling livestock
- Demonstrated knowledge in the sale operation of a cattle weighbridge; and
- An understanding of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) and the requirements when selling and buying stock
- Demonstrated experience in metal fabrication
- Ability to carry out minor plant maintenance; read and understand plans.
