About the Role: 

  • Develop, coordinate and implement community education, engagement and communication initiatives, campaigns, programs and projects across the region
  • Implement the waste education action plan including programs to promote waste avoidance and resource recovery, to raise community awareness of the need to reduce the amount of waste being disposed of to landfill and the environmental benefits
  • Provide practical and specialist support to Council business units in the design and delivery of community-facing information, engagement activities and behaviour change initiatives
  • Deliver education programs to community groups, schools, businesses and partnering organisations on Council topics such as waste, water and wastewater, road safety and Biosecurity
  • Plan, execute and evaluate innovative community education campaigns to achieve better outcomes for the environment, public amenity, and community wellbeing with a focus on behaviour change
  • Contribute multidisciplinary capability across a broad range of functions, including campaign support, digital content creation, social media content, photography, video coordination, event and launch support, stakeholder liaison, resource development and related administrative or logistical tasks
  • Provide informed advice to internal stakeholders on effective approaches to communication, engagement and community education, with regard to audience needs, organisational objectives, timing and delivery methods
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and campaigns, collect feedback and performance information, and contribute to reporting and continuous improvement
  • Represent Council professionally at meetings, community engagement activities, events and other forums as required
  • Promote information sharing and knowledge transfer to drive evidence-based decision-making, enhance capability and optimise capacity
  • Contribute to the performance of Council: demonstrate professional conduct, make the best use of knowledge, experience and skills and be accountable for own decisions and actions
  • Contribute to a safe workplace: comply with legislative and organisational requirements and be accountable for own decisions and actions

About You: 

  • Demonstrated experience in communications, community engagement, education, campaigns or a related field requiring broad operational delivery across multiple functions
  • Experience developing and delivering community education, engagement or communications initiatives, projects, campaigns or programs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor information for different audiences and platforms
  • Experience creating, coordinating or adapting content for digital, print and multimedia channels
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, respond to shifting workload demands and maintain service quality in a lean team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal staff, external stakeholders and community members
  • Ability to support the effective and professional delivery of community-facing activities that protect and enhance Council’s reputation
  • Ability to use the Adobe Creative Suite of programs (particularly InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat DC) or similar, for the creation of communications and/or educational material and graphics
  • Current or willingness to obtain NSW working with children check
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships to achieve outcomes that contribute to the achievement of the organisation’s strategic goals
  • Current Class C drivers’ licence

To be successful in this role you will have:

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of local government service delivery contexts, including the role of communication, engagement and behaviour, change approaches in supporting Council priorities
  • Experience supporting communications and engagement functions in a small or resource-constrained team
  • Experience in photography, video coordination, digital content production, event support or campaign implementation
  • Experience delivering education or engagement activities in areas such as waste, recycling, FOGO, sustainability, road safety, water use or other community priorities
